Matchday 22 of the 2016/2017 Nigerian Professional Football League returns to the Soccer Temple, Agege, Lagos on Sunday the 4th of June 2017, with a top of the table clash between MFM FC of Lagos and face Ifeanyi Ubah of Nnewi.
MFM FC will hope to bounce back from their 0-3 defeat away to Niger Tornadoes on Matchday 21, a match which highlighted the poor run of the Olukoya Boys of late.
The run has seen the team manage only one win in their last 5 games. With their talisman, NPFL top scorer, Stephen Odey away on international duty, they have also found it hard to find the back of the net, having not scored in four of their last five.
They will certainly find their Nnewi-based opponents to be a handful as the Nnewi team are currently on a run of 8 games without a loss, and with a 3-0 away win at 3SC of Ibadan in that period. They are perched in third place with 34 points, the same number of points as their hosts MFM but with 4 more goals on aggregate.
MFM have dropped to 4th and are only 1 point ahead of 5th placed Niger Tornadoes. Ifeanyi Ubah will also be buoyed by their Matchday 21 home win over Kano Pillars as they hope to inflict a home defeat of the season on MFM FC who, in spite of the fact that they are still looking for their first win and their first goals in the second half of the NPFL to come by in recent times have not lost at the Soccer Temple in their last three games .
Ifeanyi Ubah on the other hand, have had better luck finding the back of the net with 9 goals in their last 5 games. However, most of these goals have come at home, with the 3 goals in the away win over a terrible 3SC team in Ibadan being something of a flattering result for a team that had only scored once in the 3 away games before the match at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
The match should be interesting and full of action but it is unlikely that goals will flow. Ifeanyi Ubah might point to their good away record and believe they can inflict a home defeat on MFM, but the other top sides have all failed to beat MFM in Lagos.
Akwa United could only manage a 0-0 draw, while 2nd placed El-Kanemi Warriors suffered a thumping 3-0 loss. I think this match will also go the same route with Ifeanyi Ubah having to be content with a share of the points.
