23-year-old Nigeria international defender William Troost-Ekong who once played for Tottenham has revealed that Liverpool and Manchester City were also interested in him as a youngster.
Speaking to ELF Voetbal last week about his time in England, the Nigerian international now with Belgian team Gent, talked about the interest from Liverpool and City. He stated that he looked at Liverpool but had already chosen Tottenham by the time that Manchester City came for him.
“At Liverpool, I went to see yet, but when City did I had already gone. I had in fact been selected for Tottenham Hotspur. The club did everything to attract me.
“They flew my mother to London to talk and even wanted to fly to Nigeria to look for my father. When I was there pretty quickly.”
He also revealed that it is almost impossible to walk unnoticed whenever he is Nigeria because he plays for the Super Eagles.
“For instance, I never had to wait at customs and show my passport. I can walk right. Until the car my bags are carried, ” Troost-Ekong told Elf Voetbal.
“Everyone knows me there by now, after nine international matches and the Olympic Games.”
Troost-Ekong went on : “It’s a weird feeling that 140 million Nigerians know me. I have to think about things like security. We are trapped with the national team in a hotel, a la Justin Bieber.
“It is a very different life. You feel you a celebrity. And as soon as I step on the plane to Europe, everything is back to normal again.”
