Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) outfit, Akwa United, have decided to no longer participate in a four-team pre-season tournament in Calabar, Cross River.

The pre-season tournament is expected to feature Abia Warriors, Enyimba and Unicem Rovers and slated to kick off December 7 at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The event, which is an initiative of the Cross River Football Association, has been seen to be “highly demanding” by the head coach of the Promise Keepers, Abdu Maikaba.

“We are not ready for any competition right now as we are still building a team so we cannot engage our team in such a highly demanding competition.

“The pre-season is quite good but engaging in it right now will adversely affect the programmes for the team.

“We will continue with other build-up matches but will try to avoid any competitive matches now,” said the former Enyimba and Wikki Tourists coach to SuperSport.

Akwa United will, however, be involved in a friendly match against Police Machine FC in Calabar on Saturday.
