Super Falcons duo of Francisca Ordega and Halimatu Ayinde were in action for their respective club sides in the National Women’s Soccer League in USA, as Washington Spirit were held to a 1-1 draw by Western New York Flash.
Ordega lasted for 86 minutes for Spirit and was replaced with Hely Raso, whilst Chukwunonye was an unused substitute for the hosts.
Halimatu Ayinde was a 61st minutes substitute for Western New York Flash, when she replaced Ashley Nick.
The hosts, Spirit took the lead in the 16th minute when Ali Krieger made her way on the flank and fed a pass to Crystal Dunn, who took a shot on goal and Diana Matheson was at the right place to tuck the ball into the net from a rebound.
The Spirit held the lead into the half time break. The hosts showed some flashes in the second half and could have increased their lead but failed to make it count.
In the 67th minute, Francisca Ordega headed the ball into a low corner from a corner kick taken by Christine Nairn, Flash goalkeeper Chantel Jones made no mistake to keeping the ball from going into the net.
Spirit wasted opportunites that could have put the game beyond Flash. In the dying minutes of the match, Ordega, Dunn and Krieger combined well but goalkeeper Jones and her defenders were resolute in clearing away the dangers.
Then the moment came for Flash to snatch a point, on the run of play in the 90th minute, substitute Lynn Williams found the back of the net for the equaliser after goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris had made an initial save.
