Following earlier reports that the Nigeria Football Federation have picked August 30 as the date for the this year’s men and women Federation Cup finals, it has now been reported, according to the TheNFF.com that the Organising Committee of the NFF will meet in a few days time to decide a new date and venue for the cup finals.

General Secretary of NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi explained on Friday, August 21 that Nigeria’s men and women teams heading to the 11th All-African Games in Brazzaville, Congo will travel about the same day as the earlier proposed date for the finals of the Federation Cup.

“It is true that at the draw ceremony for the national finals of the Federation Cup, the NFF had picked August 30 as date for the grand finale. But a number of factors have now combined to make the date unrealistic.

“Yes, we have the finalist teams in both the men and women events. But our Super Falcons and the U-23 men’s team will travel to Brazzaville for the All-Africa Games at about the same day, and a number of the teams involved in the grand finale have players in the two teams.”

He further assured that the NFF Organising Committee, headed by the 1st Vice President Seyi Akinwunmi, will hold a meeting in the coming days to determine the new date.

“The 11th All-African Games will end on September 19. We will pick a date for the Federation Cup finals after this date, but most likely the date would be towards the end of September.”

Lobi Stars of Markudi will do battle against Akwa United of Uyo in the men’s final, while Sunshine Queens of Akure take on Bayelsa Queens of Yenagoa in the women’s final.
